Manhattan

Manhattans are simple to knock out. A clean, classic drink that is usually stirred, I shake 'em. Not so much because it's better as because it's easier, especially if you're making more than one at a time. And I don't use expensive booze, so I'm less concerned about "bruising." Aficionados will scoff, but I'm no aficionado. Bourbon is a common substitute for the rye.

The line-up:

1 Shot Rye Whiskey
Half-shot sweet vermouth
Dash or two of Angostura Bitters
Blackberry or similar garnish (maraschino cherry is classic but gross)

If shaking, fill a shaker with two or three ice cubes; if stirring, fill a tall Collins glass with ice. Add the rye, vermouth and bitters. Shake or stir. Strain into a martini glass and garnish with berries.
